We interviewed the guys at Sagacards Tarot who are building digital goods and experiences to give tarot a home in the web3. Here, they put their cards on the table.

1. How would you describe your artistic style?

We have multiple artists working on this project, and the style gravitates around modern takes on historically informed styles. The primary card art uses the most traditional tarot deck—the Rider Waite Smith—as its inspiration.

This is important because in the world of tarot, the symbolism and imagery are all very intentional and run very deep. Respecting that pedigree is how we plan to attract the established tarot audience to our project.

We also work with an artist specializing in traditional Norse knotwork, which has its own storied history. Combining these styles gives the Legends NFT series its own unique (if subtle) aesthetic.

2. What drew you to NFT creation rather than traditional canvas-based art?

NFTs are the natural format for goods in this project. We’re working to create a place to do tarot online.

3. Are there any artists who have inspired you? What do you like about their work?

The Threejs community, the tarot art community, Magic the Gathering artists, and the folks behind digital card games like Hearthstone and MTG arena have been the key inspirations for this project.

4. What made you create NFTs?

They’re the only form of a digital good that anyone should accept 😂! For an online tarot scene to exist, having decks and other personal things that you own without intermediaries is just essential.

5. Can you tell us about your project?

We’re building digital goods and experiences to give tarot a home in the new web. If you’ve never heard of it before, tarot is like a guided practice or is a game of self-reflection, depending on who you ask, which uses cards rich in symbolism to prompt intuitive insights.

6. How many NFTs will be minted? Can you talk us through the process of how you create the art?

We are releasing 22 different NFTs in our series, and there will be 100-200 mints in each drop.

7. Will Your NFT be able to breed, stake, or ever be in a game?

While I would use different words to describe all of those things within our project, the short answer is… yes!

We are developing a deck crafting system that will allow holders to spawn a full tarot deck from their legends, which they can then use in dApps or sell on a marketplace. We expect that to be a reality in the Fall/Winter of this year, but certain parts will be done earlier.

8. What benefits do you think the Internet Computer has over other L1 blockchains when it comes to creating NFTs?

The IC is like a one-stop-shop for an NFT developer. This blockchain can handle everything from the token standard to the assets to any kind of advanced functionality that you want to build in.

9. What other art have you seen that excites you in the Internet Computer NFT ecosystem?

The quality and character of art in every Pokedstudio project is incredible. I respect the groundbreaking work that Toniq has done with their NFT projects. I love CAP Crowns because that project is closely tied to substantial ecosystem development.

10. What excites you most about your launch?

We are developing a particular Legend variation for this launch that will only be minted once in this drop. I’m looking forward to seeing who ends up with that one. Every launch that we do is also an opportunity to interact with collectors and deploy the latest improvements to our tech.

11. What advice would you give to anyone trying to enter into the world of NFTs?

Take your time! There are some underserved niches out there, don’t be afraid to do your own thing! The IC NFT ecosystem in 2022 should start to become more mature, and with that, it should be technically easier to roll out your project.

12. Do you have further plans to work with ICP Squad in the future after this initial sale?

ICP Squad has always been great to me, and I’ll always be open to working with them!

13. Can you envisage a future where the most valuable NFT space is on the Internet Computer?

Chain key tech might unlock a lot of potential as the barriers between ICP, ETH, and BTC are removed. I also think that the development paradigm offered by the IC is potent, and it has the potential to become the foremost L2.

14. Why do you think NFTs have become so valuable in such a short space of time?

That’s an incredibly complicated question. I try to keep an unbiased and curious perspective on this topic. I believe that NFT tech is a very powerful ownership paradigm for digital goods, and I’d like to think it has basically unlocked an internet of value and corresponding creative groundswell. There are also external factors that I can’t ignore, like inflation, the indoor-ish behavior surge of the pandemic, and the lack of regulation.

15. Tell us about your team?

We have contributors who are artists, developers, writers, tarot fans, and community builders.

16. What advantages do you believe you have over other competitors?

Not that we never could, but I don’t think we have competitors right now. Nobody owns tarot, and we’re committed to being part of a very open ecosystem. There are a few other tarot projects out there, but they’re either projects that complement ours or are only focused on collectibles, etc.

17. Tell us about the challenges you face while building your project?

We are building in a young ecosystem, and a lot of the infrastructure for a project like this one doesn’t exist… so we’re helping to make it!

18. Any plan to move into Metaverse?

It’s hard to know what people mean when they use this term nowadays, but I think there’s some potential for actual overlap between our project and the idea of the metaverse. Tarot is a very personal activity, but it can also be incredibly social.

We want to build apps and experiences to honor that, so one day, you could have your own tarot room, the metaverse powered by our project. We also want to work with other developers who would be interested in bringing our tarot NFTs into their metaverse projects.

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions 😊
